CONGRATS TO OUR Cuman na mBunscol SECTION WINNERS!

18th May 2018

Congratulations to our Gaelic footballers who won their section of the Cuman na mBunscol and qualifying for the finals in Garvaghey on the 6th of June. It was a fantastic, well run tournament and we at St.Mary's would like to thank Mr O'Neill and all his great staff at St.John's Kingsisland for all their hard work each year.

Our footballers went all day unbeaten, defeating BPOL and Derrylatinee in the group stages, Annaghmore in the semi final and just edged a fantastic final against hosts St. John's Kingsisland. (Match report below)

Well done Boys and Girls, you certainly did your school proud :)

MATCH REPORT:

St.Mary’s, Carland 1-5

St.John’s, Kingsland 2-1

The final of this section of the Cuman na mBunscol pitted the two group winners, from each section who both had gone undefeated all day. Playing with the wind St.Mary’s started the brightest, with Conall opening the scoring. St.Mary’s were able to use the wind to their advantage with Conall and Darragh (2) tagging on a few magical scores and a few fantastic saves from keeper John meant it was 0-4 to 0-0 at the half time interval. St.Mary’s started brightly and continued their relentless pressure and tagged on a free from Conall to leave it 0-5 to 0-0 with 2 minutes remaining. Kingisland were not going down without a fight, and for the next minute and a half turned the tide with two goals and a point leaving the score 0-5 to 2-1 and looked like victory was going to elude St.Mary’s in the final for the second year in a row. However, Joint Man of the Match, Henry had different ideas as he plucked the last kickout from the sky, layed off the oncoming Aaron, who was Mr consistent all day, kicked a high ball into conall who beat the keeper to the ball and saved the day with a fisted effort to the net. St.Mary’s held on to send the sidelines into raptures.

Men of the Match: Henry and Darragh
